16 DAYS CAMPAIGN 2011
Background
The National Department of Human Settlements is championing the 16 Houses in 16 Days Build as part of the national 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign. Shelter has been identified as one of the major needs for the victims of gender-based violence, persons with disability and child headed households.
As the coordinator of the national 16 Days Campaign, the Department for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities (DWCPD) has announced that the campaign will be launched in Gauteng Province on 25 November 2011 and the closing ceremony will be in Mpumalanga Province on 10 December 2011.
Objectives
The 16 Houses in 16 Days project seeks to:
· Address homelessness amongst abused women and children
· Alleviate the economic abuse that victims of gender based violence experience and
· Create a safe environment for women and children by providing shelter
