SISULU HOSTS WOMENS BUILD

Minister of housing, Lindiwe Sisulu will officially launch the 2006 Women’s Build and the guidelines on Mainstreaming Gender in the Housing and Human Settlement Sector in Orange Farm, South of Johannesburg on 14 August 2006.

The build will be in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the women’s march to the Union Buildings in 1956, in protest against the pass laws and injustice to women by the apartheid government.

The National Department of Housing in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Housing, Women for Housing, National Home Builders Registration Council and Thubelisha Homes, will build 50 houses for elderly women in Orange Farm.

Together, and in partnership with a number of sponsors, 600 volunteers will be hosted each day i.e. 14-18 August 2006, to build houses. The project will offer many of the participants, mostly women, an opportunity to gain practical experience, ranging from technical construction skills to leadership and teamwork skills.
