HOUSING MINISTER TO HAND OVER 8200 HOUSES IN PORT ELIZABETH

PRETORIA: Housing Minister, Mrs Brigitte Mabandla, will officially give houses to 8200 families in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area in the Eastern Cape tomorrow (26 March 2004) at a ceremony that will be held at Kuyga township in Port Elizabeth. The function will start at 10:00. Mabandla will be accompanied by Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile, Local Government and Housing MEC Gugile Nkwinti and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan’s Executive Mayor Nceba Faku.

The projects are located at Wells Estate Phase 2, Kabar, Langa, Malabar, Ikamvelihle, Kuyga and Bethelsdorp. All the houses are built through the Metro House concept, which is the Metropolitan Council’s plan for a house that is bigger than the original RDP house. These houses are also part of the 26 000 houses that will have been built by June this year as part of fighting the housing backlog in the area. Most of the beneficiaries come from the informal settlements and backyard rooms.
