STATEMENT ON THE SERVICE DELIVERY UNRESTS
In Response to numerous enquiries regarding the many service delivery protests in the country, the National Department of Housing wishes to state the following.
The protests are aimed at the local government spheres’ apparent lack of service delivery. The National Department of Housing has no jurisdiction over local government. This conundrum is among many issues that have propelled the department’s recent to call for the alignment of the all laws pertaining to housing delivery, thus our impending task of having the housing delivery laws reviewed.
The meeting of the housing Minister and her Members of Executive Committee (MinMEC) will take place on Friday after which the Minister and MECs will be available to answer questions related to their sole area of jurisdiction – housing.
It is the responsibility of the Minister of Provincial and Local Government to deal with municipalities. He has been mandated to respond, on behalf of Government on these issues, and will do so at his convenience.
