Work on
N2
Gateway
Lead
Project
Begins
The
National,
Provincial
and
Local
government
have
combined
their
resources
to
deliver
of the
N2
Gateway
Project
in the
City of
Cape
Town.
This
project
is the
lead
pilot of
the new
Comprehensive
Housing
Plan for
South
Africa
that was
adopted
by
National
Cabinet
on the 2nd
September
2004.
The
delivery
of this
phase of
the plan
is
multi-pronged
to
guarantee
that as
many
aspects
of the
new plan
are
catered
for
within
delivery
of the
N2
Gateway
project.
The
Plan,
aims to,
among
other
policy
matters,
eradicate
informal
settlements
in South
Africa
in as
short a
period
as is
physically
possible.
The
eradication
of
informal
settlement
is one
of the
most
exciting
aspects
of this
plan
which
was
agreed
to by
all
Housing
Members
of
Executive
Committees
(MECs)
in South
Africa.
‘While
most
people
are
resting,
senior
representatives
of
national
and
provincial
government
and the
City of
Cape
Town
have
been
hard at
work
over
these
holiday
season
to
ensure
that
those
who are
living
in
‘squatter
camps’
within
the
metro of
Cape
Town
have
their
dignity
restored.
We
intend
to get
this
right,
and
signal
government’s
commitment
to
provide
shelter
to the
homeless
in a
short a
time
frame as
possible,’
said
housing
Minister
Lindiwe
Sisulu.
“We have
invited
proposals
on the
implementation
of the
N2
Gateway
project
in Cape
Town
from
interested
parties
in the
construction
industry.
Advertisements
have
been
running
in all
major
newspapers
30
December
2004 to
January
2, 2005.
Expressions
of
interest
ought to
be
lodged
with the
N2
Gateway
project
manager
by the 5th
of
January
2005
before
14h00.
Due to
the
tight
deadlines
with
which
this
matter
has to
be
dealt,
we have
collapsed
time
frames
to
ensure
deliver
on
time,”
said
Minister
Sisulu.
The
challenge
for
Government
is to
ensure
that
this
project
meets
the
standard
of ‘The
Plan’ to
build
sustainable
human
settlements
designed
to
uplift
the
standard
of
living
of more
than 100
000
residents
of the
City of
Cape
Town.
Minister
Sisulu
welcomed
the
involvement
of the
District
Six
Trustees
in the
N2
Gateway
Project
and
expressed
the hope
that
this
would
expedite
the
return
of
families
displaced
from the
area
during
the
apartheid
era.
