Who are you? Where do you come from? What do you want? What are you doing here, in this place of squalor, such a horrible place?

There were as many answers as there were questions.

“I’m waiting for a job.” “I want to be close to my husband.” “I want to live near my wife’s workplace.” “I run my spaza business here.” “I drive a taxi around here.” “I’m waiting for a house.” “I want a better life.” “I’m waiting…” Endless waiting. Hopeful waiting.

Nothima Kala’s house stands proud, and serves as a symbol of a new beginning for the Joe Slovo Informal Settlement near Port Elizabeth’s KwaDwesi Township

After all the 75-year-old pensioner built her first home assisted by her neighbours.  The house stands tall as one of the many houses built under Federation of the Urban (and Rural) Poor (FEDUP) programme aimed to facilitating the building of houses by communities.

FEDUP is supported by the Government PHP programme which provides funds to communities through a registered association for training, project management and the overall building of houses.

A very proud moment – a Moladi home was handed over to granny Mokhachane (83) during the Woman’s Day and Presidential Imbizo on Saturday, 11 August, by President Thabo Mbeki accompanied by Eastern Cape Premier Ms Nosimo Balindlela and Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

The Department of Human Settlements Announces the Establishment of Housing Development Agency
The South African Department of Housing is the latest to look outside of itself for solutions to meet their deadline for delivery. Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu recently announced the planned establishment of a Housing Development Agency (HDA), which would help and not replace existing mechanisms for housing delivery.

The Department of Human Settlements Aims for Practical Solutions to meet the 2014 Deadline for Eradication of Slums
The Department of Housing has eight years left to meet its objective of having “a nation free of slums by 2014” and it is a deadline it intends to meet. In his state of the nation address President Thabo Mbeki said government remained committed in intensifying the housing programme.
