BACKGROUND
The Women’s
Build is an annual event organized to commemorate the historic 1956 Women’s
March to the Union Building. In the spirit of Letsema, volunteers from
government, private, non government organizations and community are mobilized to
participate in the construction of houses for beneficiaries in poor communities.
It is a partnership project of the Department of Human
Settlements with sector stakeholders and is hosted annually in one or more
provinces to commemorate the Women’s Month.
This year’s
build is hosted by Mpumalanga Province, Tekwane North of Bombela Municipality.
The Build is scheduled to start from the 15-28 August 2009. The Launch is
planned for the 14th August and Closing Ceremony on the 28 August
2009. The Women’s Build is celebrated under the theme “Together
let’s do more”.
Objectives
The objectives of the build are to:

Take
part in the national campaign to commemorate the historic 1956 Women’s March to
the Union Building;
•
Raise consciousness about the construction sector and women’s role in it;
•
Demonstrate how cooperative governance and partner institutions support the
Department of Human settlements women in housing initiatives;
•
Promote women’s access to economic opportunities within the housing sector; and
•
Promote volunteerism and partnerships.
Beneficiaries
The
targeted beneficiaries for the Build include amongst others:

Elderly
·
Female heading households,
·
Women with disabilities women caring for orphans and other
vulnerable children.
