MINISTERS SIMELANE AND HLABISA TO ENGAGE WITH LEADERSHIP OF ABAHLALI BASEMJONDOLO

The Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Thembi Simelane and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, will, tomorrow, 14 June 2025 meet with leadership of Abahlali Basemjondolo to discuss solutions to a memorandum of demands presented to the Department in April this year. 

In their memorandum, Abahlali Basemjondolo demanded amongst other matters, land, and decent housing, upgrading of informal settlements, job creation, immediate and collective tenure security, an end of forced removal and active participation in human settlements planning. 

Following extensive consultations among three spheres of government and other relevant stakeholders, a comprehensive response to the demands has been formulated. This will be shared and discussed with leadership of Abahlali Basemjondolo at the meeting to be joined by MEC for Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma and MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi and several Mayors.
