Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale and the MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Helen August-Sauls will launch the Southernwood Square Social Housing Project in East London, Eastern Cape on the 14th of February 2012.
The nine-storey building pushed boundaries in terms of design and structural engineering while maximizing density for the confined site. The project caters for households earning between R2 500 to R7 500 per month.
It consists of 249 units, 57 bachelor flats, 78 one bedroom flats and 114 two bedrooms flats. During construction 140 jobs were created and 90 of these were from the local community.
The project is within a walking distance from hospitals, schools, higher education institutions and places of work.
