Media Statement - 07 February 2012

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has been appointed by FIFA as a member of the prestigious media committee. The committee is chaired by Mohamed Raouraoua from Algeria and consists of other luminaries from Brazil, England, Italy, France, Germany and Mali, among others.

The media committee deals with working conditions of the media at FIFA events and maintains relations with international media organizations.

Sexwale, who is on his way back from the Antarctica Expedition with the likes of former US Vice President Al Gore, Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Christiana Figueres, says he is humbled by the appointment which should be seen as a continued recognition of South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup of which he was a member of the organizing committee.

Having been a member of the FIFA Fair Play and Development Committee over the years, he will continue being one of FIFA’s role-models in the campaign to SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD led by FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke in a letter congratulated Sexwale wishing him “success and enjoyment” in this new role.
