The beneficiaries of the houses are 80 year-old Mrs Jeanette Charlie who is disabled and Mr Seleku James Xontwana who is 103 years-old. Both Mrs Charlie and Mr Xontwana have been on the housing waiting list for more than 10 years.
In line with this year’s theme: "Take Action; inspire change; make everyday a Mandela Day”, the department will celebrate the Nelson Mandela Day to inspire and improve the lives of South Africans. The focus is mainly on the poor, elderly, people with disabilities, women and child headed households as well as families in dire need of shelter.
The Deputy Minister and the executive mayor of The Drakenstein Municipality in Paarl, Ms Gesie van Deventer will also lead a march from the Freedom Hill to the Victor Verster prison (Drakenstein prison) where Madiba spend his last years in prison for the struggle against Apartheid. Over 1000 people are expected at the march.
