Media Statement - 30 September 2011
Anglo American Platinum Limited (Amplats) takes pride in being one of the companies at the forefront of embracing the Department of Human Settlement’s Each-One-Settle-One campaign.
The campaign is aimed at lobbying and mobilising the Top 200 JSE listed companies, individual stakeholders, private sector institutions, and donor agencies to assist the Department in providing people with adequate housing, with South Africa’s housing backlog estimated at 2.3 million.
Amplats is facilitating the building of 20,000 houses for its employees over the next 10 years, through its Employer Assisted Housing Scheme. Amplats will contribute R1,4 billion towards the scheme. Over 12,000 housing units are being built in the North West, and 8,000 housing units in Limpopo. Subsequently, more than 130 families have already moved into new houses built by the company in Seraleng, Rustenburg.
These integrated human settlements, which are located close to the places where Platinum’s labour-force works, have been built as part of the company’s alignment with the shared goals and objectives of government.
Amplats Executive Head: Human Resources, Khanyisile Kweyama, says that the company’s housing scheme also forms part of its desire to go beyond compliance in all its activities.
“In everything that we do, we strive to make a real difference to the communities in which we operate and exceeding their expectations. Therefore, our housing initiative is in line with these values, and emphasises our complete dedication to the sustainable development of these communities.”
She concludes that broader involvement from other South African companies will help realise sustainable change for South Africans.
“The Each-One-Settle-One campaign is just one way that companies can get involved in helping South Africans reach their full potential. Therefore, it makes sense for all parties to come together and collaborate on services provided. Through united actions, rather than unilateral ones, the corporate sector can achieve so much more, and ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for all South Africans.”
