Sisulu visits Johannesburg CBD to assess progress on Urban Renewal Programmes

Minister of Human Settlements Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, MP, will visit the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) to assess progress made on the Urban Renewal Project.

The National Government has committed over R1 Billion this financial year towards the development of the inner cities across the country through different grants. This investment, implemented through the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), is aimed at restructuring cities by providing low to medium income households with housing opportunities in well serviced areas of high economic activity.

Investment in social housing projects is also targeted in urban areas that require revitalisation. It is hoped that this state investment will act as a catalyst for private sector investment thus the Minister will visit several buildings in the city which are government funded, and have since provided decent accommodation to a number of households including students’ accommodation.

Minister Sisulu will engage members of the media on the visit as well as provide update on the two-month maintenance of the tunnel system of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, and general water situation across the country.

Minister Sisulu will be accompanied by the Deputy Ministers of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Mrs Tshwete and Mr Mahlobo, Mr Maile, Gauteng MEC of Human Settlements and the CEO of SHRA, Mr Rory Gallocher.
