Statement from the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Ms L.N. Sisulu

“On 17 July 2020, I was informed of a grandmother in Winterveld, Tshwane, whose house had collapsed. She cried for help about her dire situation which really broke our hearts but what hurt me the most was that her grandchildren had to be taken away because she was unable to provide them with safe accommodation. A contractor then offered to build a house for her. l gave the contractor a deadline of 09 August 2020 but instead he said it will be completed by 30 July 2020.

The pictures shared start the journey of construction from Saturday, 18 July on Mandela Day, to Wednesday, 22 July and Saturday, 25 July 2020. It is clear that alternative building methods must become common practice in our communities. They are efficient and effective and we can now provide houses to our people at a faster rate. I will be visiting Gogo Mndebele on 9 August 2020 to celebrate Women’s Day with her.” Minister Sisulu
