MINISTER SIMELANE TO DELIVER A KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT THE NHFC’S 30 YEARS OF EXPANDING ACCESS TO HOUSING FINANCE
The Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, will on Friday, 18 September 2026, deliver a keynote address at the National Home Finance Corporation’s (NHFC) 30th Anniversary Summit at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg.
Convened under the theme: “30 Years of Expanding Access To Housing Finance” the Summit is expected to be attended by stakeholders, including financial institutions, government, developers, Non-Governmental Organisations, traditional leaders, property practitioners and contractors,
The Summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to reflect on the achievements, challenges, and the necessary adjustments for NHFC to continue delivering on its mandate which is to broaden access to affordable housing, ensuring that the missing middle in the gap market can secure decent housing.
Established in 1996 as an agency of the Department of Human Settlements, the NHFC has been providing affordable housing finance solutions for low-to-middle income households in South Africa. Over the years, more than R30bn has been leveraged demonstrating NHFC’s ability to mobilise capital and use partnerships to multiply development impact.
The NHFC also administers First Home Finance Programme which is a once‑off housing subsidy for South African first‑time homebuyers earning between R3 501 and R22 000 per month on a sliding scale with minimum of and maximum of R169 265 towards buying or building a home.
Through the First Home Finance, close to R2billion has been disbursed, resulting in more than 32 000 subsidy approvals since 2019. This has leveraged more about R10.6 from the private sector in investments.
As per the 2024-2029 Medium Term Development Plan (MTDP), NHFC is expected to deliver 140 000 housing opportunities, and the agency is on track to achieve the target.
Later in the evening will be a stakeholder engagement to honour men and women who have been part of and benefitted from the programmes of this institution over the years.
