Department of Human Settlements "Know Your Rental Rights" Campaign moves to the Eastern Cape
Following the successful engagements with students at the Universities of Free State and Mpumalanga, the Department of Human Settlements (DHS) will continue with the Rental Housing Tribunal’s (RHT) “Know Your Rental Rights: Student Edition” Campaign at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, Mthatha Campus and King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College on 15 and 16 October 2026.
The nation-wide campaign seeks to empower students with knowledge about their rental rights and obligations. It also highlights the support offered by RHT and provides guidance on how students can access free rental dispute resolution services available in their provinces.
The initiative forms part of a broader national education and awareness programme aimed at addressing challenges experienced by students using private accommodation, including unfair rental practices, unlawful evictions, payments, and disputes between tenants and landlords.
The campaign is being rolled out collaboratively with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the South African Union of Students (SAUS), and the South African Technical and Vocational Education and Training Students Association (SATVETSA).
