Bloemfontein: The Free Statement Department of Human Settlements is currently involved in an internal investigation based on alleged irregularities. This step follows the MEC’s repeated warning that the department will get to the root-cause of the challenges within the department and that whoever is found culpable will be dealt with harshly irrespective of whether the culprit is an official of the department or a service provider.

This investigation is expected to be completed by 31 October 2012.

The scope of the investigation covers, among others, the following:

• manipulation of the individual subsidy system
• allocation lists of contractors
• advance payments
• poor or non-inspection by the technical staff

Due to this ongoing investigation five Senior Management officials - two Chief Directors and three Directors- have been placed on precautionary suspension pending the outcome of the process.
